Inside Marrakech Menara Airport: An Architectural Gem

Marrakech Menara Airport is an architectural gem at the service of tourism. This infrastructure, inaugurated in 2016 and conceived as the best possible gateway, can be considered as such, welcoming travelers and announcing the Morocco they are about to discover: a country that looks to the future without forgetting past traditions. In this post, we tell you all the details of this place that, for many, is a monument in itself.

A building that combines tradition and modernity

The most iconic space of Marrakech Menara Airport is, logically, its passenger terminal. It is a space with ample open space thanks to its white aluminum structure, made up of an omnipresent network of large diamonds. The roof has dozens of pyramids that let light through, and the facade extends to create a spectacular overhang of more than 20 meters.

One aspect that draws attention, both inside and out, is the play of light and shadows that filters through the roof, in a clear reference to the nuanced light that reaches the interior of houses and mosques of the Islamic tradition, so jealous of its privacy. In fact, on the facade, this play of light and shadows is achieved by filtering the sun’s rays through a large lattice in the overhang, while inside it is achieved by the plates located in the translucent pyramids of the roof.

The interior, extraordinarily diaphanous, uses plastered granite for its pavement, which enhances the brightness and the sensation of luminosity that permeates the whole. At night, the selective lighting of the rhombuses of the structure creates the fantasy of being under the stars of the desert.

Sustainability and functionality, the other pillars

Marrakech Menara Airport was designed by the local architect Abdou Lahlou and by the Swiss studio E2A Architects. And one of the main premises of the project was sustainability, which is achieved by a subtle detail: the plates that filter the light through the pyramids are, in reality, photovoltaic cells arranged in such a way that they configure geometric designs and capture the sun’s rays to convert them into the electrical energy that feeds the building.

The main entrance door is perhaps the most contemporary part of the complex, with a set of curved lines and spherical spaces, sheltered under another more solid overhang but with large perforations for the pillars and tie rods of its own structure. At its doors, an orderly traffic of taxis and buses that serve the more than 9 million passengers who usually pass through here each year.

Some practical information about the airport

Marrakech Menara Airport is located about 6 km away from the medina, that is, its historic center. There are buses that connect both places but, due to this short distance, many choose to use the taxi system. We remind you that if you travel with us, our driver will be ready to take you to the hotel in a comfortable and private transfer.
As for the flights and airlines that operate here, those of Royal Air Maroc and its subsidiaries stand out, as well as low cost airlines such as Easyjet and Ryanair. In this way, Marrakech is directly connected with the main city of the country, Casablanca, and also with Tangier, the northern gateway to Morocco. As for domestic flights, planes arrive here from the main European capitals and cities, but also from other strategic regions such as North America and the Middle East.
