They have many similarities, such as the prominence of a woman on stage who delights with her undulating and rhythmic movements, especially of the hip and abdomen.
But on the other hand, Shikat dancers do not leave their belly exposed, but wear the classic caftan, that is, a long, thin and light dress, full of sequins and other beads, which move together to give dynamism and shine to each gesture. In any case, these dresses are often fitted at the waist, which gives a plus of sensuality to the performance.
The music that accompanies the performance is full of genuinely Moroccan timbres and melodies: it has a large percussion component with darbuka, and also strident sounds with stringed instruments, such as the rabel. In addition, the changes in rhythm and tempo are accused, with the aim of emphasizing the body movements of the dancer, who is the center of all eyes.
Where to See Shikat Shows
Shikat shows may appear in the music and dance festivals that tour the country throughout the year, as well as in the programs of local moussems throughout the Moroccan geography. However, the seasonality of these cultural events makes it difficult to schedule attendance at one of them.
On the other hand, it is easier to go to a local or restaurant that has this type of performance as an attraction. In the city of Marrakech there are several of them, such as Le Comptoir Darna, where belly dancing or oriental shows are also organized.
