Belly Dance Performances in Morocco: What Are They and What Are They Like?

Many travelers want to add a belly dance performance in Morocco to their itinerary. But first, one might ask: are there any? And if so, what are they like and where can you witness them? In this post, we answer both questions so you can consider this option during your trip through the country.

Belly Dancing in Morocco? More Like Shikat

To begin, it is important to clarify the concept of belly dancing: this term is usually used to refer to oriental or Egyptian dance, which is a dance widely spread in the Middle East and performed by one or more dancers. Their clothing may vary, but it combines short or strapless garments for the upper part and a long skirt with openings in the lower part, with fringes, lace or other hanging details. And in all cases, the set leaves the belly exposed, hence its name, concentrating much of the attention there thanks to undulating movements of the hip and pelvis.

But in Morocco, this type of dance cannot be considered folkloric or local: of course, there may be shows of this type on the bill, but the local version of this dance is another and is called Shikat. They have many similarities, such as the prominence of a woman on stage who delights with her undulating and rhythmic movements, especially of the hip and abdomen.

But on the other hand, Shikat dancers do not leave their belly exposed, but wear the classic caftan, that is, a long, thin and light dress, full of sequins and other beads, which move together to give dynamism and shine to each gesture. In any case, these dresses are often fitted at the waist, which gives a plus of sensuality to the performance.

The music that accompanies the performance is full of genuinely Moroccan timbres and melodies: it has a large percussion component with darbuka, and also strident sounds with stringed instruments, such as the rabel. In addition, the changes in rhythm and tempo are accused, with the aim of emphasizing the body movements of the dancer, who is the center of all eyes.

Where to See Shikat Shows

Shikat shows may appear in the music and dance festivals that tour the country throughout the year, as well as in the programs of local moussems throughout the Moroccan geography. However, the seasonality of these cultural events makes it difficult to schedule attendance at one of them.

On the other hand, it is easier to go to a local or restaurant that has this type of performance as an attraction. In the city of Marrakech there are several of them, such as Le Comptoir Darna, where belly dancing or oriental shows are also organized. Casablanca, being the largest city in Morocco, also has venues that, on a recurring or occasional basis, organize Shikat performances.

However, the best way, and also the most authentic, to witness a show of this version of belly dancing in Morocco is through a private show. That was precisely the origin and meaning of these female shows, which used to delight sultans and members of high society in private. In this sense, you can hire the services of the dancers and their accompanying musicians to deploy all their art in a personalized performance, in a local reserved for this purpose.
