Blue Flag Beaches in Morocco

The large number of blue flag beaches in Morocco is a good demonstration of this country’s commitment to quality tourism. In fact, it is the second African country with the most distinctions of this type, and the leader in the entire Arab world. In this post we tell you more about it, which will help you choose your bathing area during your summer holidays.

What is the Blue Flag?

The blue flag is the distinction awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE, for its acronym in English), since 1987. If this recognition flies on a beach, it means that it has passed the quality criteria in the following aspects, among many others:

  • Information visible to the public about the ecosystems and the rules for using the bathing area
  • Cleanliness of the waters
  • Cleanliness of the sand and surrounding areas
  • Services to bathers, especially in terms of safety (lifeguards, first aid, etc.)

How many and which Ones are there in Morocco?

In 2025, the blue flag beaches in Morocco totaled 33. And the best news is that the number of recognitions not only remains, but also tends to increase over the years, which demonstrates the commitment of the authorities to promoting quality sun and beach tourism.

On the Mediterranean coast and in the nearby Tangier area, there are more than a dozen, with the new Tamuda Bay area in the Tetouan area in full swing, as well as iconic bathing areas next to Cape Spartel, such as Ba Kacem Beach. Nador and Saida, near the border with Algeria, is another area of reference in this regard.

There are also numerous blue flag beaches on the Atlantic coast, especially between the capital Rabat and the most populated city, Casablanca. Here are bathing areas such as Skhirat Beach or Ain Diab, very popular with the local public, given the population density that is concentrated here.

And further south, the distinctions are also present, especially beyond Agadir, in destinations such as Sidi Ifni or El Aaiún, which are being integrated into tourist circuits based on quality proposals, where tranquility and newly built resorts prevail, all combined with water sports such as surfing, which is an increasing attraction for foreign tourists.

In addition, the presence of a bathing area in a mountain lake is striking: that of Aguelmam Azigza which, although it does not have the fame and level of development of tourist infrastructures of other coastal destinations, has earned this recognition for the beauty of the surroundings and its harmonious integration with it, having been the object of investments in recent years, with the construction of a parking lot and public toilets.

You can consult the complete list of blue flag beaches in Morocco in this link on the FEE website, geolocated. Of the 50 countries participating in this international project, the country with the most blue flags is Spain (close to 750, between beaches and marinas).

And also, Marinas

The FEE not only certifies the quality of beaches, but also that of marinas, which in Morocco receive the name of marinas. Specifically, four marinas mainly located in the north. They are those of Alhucemas (Port de plaisance d’Al Houceima), Castillejos-Rincón (Port de Marina Smir), Tangier (Tanja Marina Bay International) and Saidia (Marina Saidia), where the attraction is not only in the number of moorings, but also in the complementary services that are given to its users, which guarantees a safe journey and stay for those who dock here.
