Art galleries in Morocco are an excellent option for collector-travelers. While the country had remained on the sector’s “periphery” until recently, it can now be said to be one of Africa’s art epicentres, with artists who stand out for their talent and galleries that believe in them and sell their work. Many professional intermediaries see investment opportunities here, destined for expert collections, private institutions, or museums, and in many cases with a presence at the 1-54 fair.
But beyond these galleries that champion names already recognised internationally, in Morocco there is also room for smaller artists who modestly sell their work directly to the end customer, without intermediaries, with the sole aim of providing a beautiful souvenir of a trip that will not only remain etched in the mind and heart, but will also decorate the home upon return.
In this post, we mention five of these galleries, featuring works of various types, whether as an investment or for private purchase without further pretensions. We are aware that there are many more, but this short list represents an interesting sample of the country’s reality. You can experience this same approach in other Mandala Tours destinations: Chic Morocco is an agency within this group, with similar agencies in other countries such as Turkey, Egypt, or Jordan, to name just a few examples.
L’Blassa Art Space in Marrakech
The city of Marrakech is home to a large share of Morocco’s art galleries, as it is the country’s most visited destination. And many of those visitors, with high purchasing power, are the ideal audience for many artists. L’Blassa Art Space is a good example, with rooms where you can discover works by North African artists, both figurative and abstract. Right in the heart of the Gueliz neighbourhood.
Loft Art Gallery in Casablanca
The most populous city also boasts some of the most important art galleries in Morocco. We mention, for instance, Loft Art Gallery, which has a corresponding branch in Marrakech. Its catalog is one of the richest, featuring artists of the stature of Farid Belakhia. The presence of female artists is also a breath of fresh air for the local scene, with works by creators such as Amina Agueznay, Joana Choumali, or Hiba Baddou.
Gallerie Gallet in Essaouira
The coastal city of Essaouira, in the south of the country, is one of the most interesting from an art-gallery perspective. With an open, colourful atmosphere, all of this carries over into the style of the creators exhibited here. Gallerie Gallet, very close to the Skala, is a good example, where you can see a particular taste for material abstraction, inspired by nature.
Medina Art Gallery in Tangier
Founded in 1999, this gallery effectively reflects the creative atmosphere of northern Morocco, as many of the artists exhibited here originate from that region (Tangier, Tetouan, Al Hoceima…). For example, Ben Kiran Faissal, famous for female portraits, a genre not so common in other galleries. Additionally, there is space for landscapes and even works of orientalist taste.
Mohsin el Ouragli in Chaouen
As it is a humbler and more rural destination than the large cities mentioned above, Chaouen features small galleries managed by the artists themselves, which often allow visitors to come into direct contact with the creators. For example, the gallery of Mohsin el Ouragli, a humble artist who keeps the local blue very much in mind (how could he not?) and goes beyond painting with forays into textile art and other media.
