Where Dar el Bacha Street Is Located
Don’t look for it on official street maps: Dar el Bacha Street in Marrakech isn’t officially called that, although that’s how it’s popularly known (and therefore how guidebooks reference it). In reality, it’s Route Sidi Abdelaziz, a street that runs perpendicular to Avenue Dar el Glaoui. Its location is in the northwestern sector of the medina, in the lively Mouassine neighborhood. Its name, incidentally, refers to the former residence of the pasha, which was located precisely here.
What Its Main Attraction Is
The main attraction of this street and its side alleys is the vibrant commercial character that prevails here. It cannot be described as a luxury street, but this artery of shops and other establishments has been renovated over time (most recently to restore damage from the 2023 earthquake), resulting in a genuine place where boutiques and artisan workshops showcase their creations to the public. And they do so in a more tranquil atmosphere than the typical bustle of the medina’s souks, located not far from here.
Places of Interest on the Street
Without intending to make this section an exhaustive guide, we can mention some establishments present on Dar el Bacha Street in Marrakech. We recommend checking their status before your trip, as these are active businesses that may undergo renovations, relocations, or even permanent closures, depending on each case.
- Local creator shops: this term encompasses a wide range of artisans and artists working in very different disciplines. For example, fashion, such as the Topolina shop or Boutique Hanout, featuring garments in leather and more
- Cultural shops and galleries: for instance, bookstores, with Dar el Bacha Bookstore being its great icon. As for galleries selling and exhibiting paintings and sculptures, Alaoui Art can be mentioned. Khalid Galleries is another reference point, where interesting antiques can also be found
- Restaurants: naturally, many restaurants line this artery, combining traditional gastronomy with modern, minimalist cuisine, often in welcoming riads. Dar Moha is a fine example of this, while Cafe Dar el Bacha represents the same in the café category
- Hammams and hotels: often, one is integrated into the other, providing not only accommodation but also a wide range of wellness services. Examples include Hammam de la Rose and Hotel Palais Donab
Other Places of Interest in Dar el Bacha
In addition to these shops and establishments, there are other places of interest on Dar El Bacha Street or in its immediate surroundings that may attract the attention of cultural tourists, primarily. The first of these is undoubtedly the aforementioned Dar el Bacha Palace, the neighborhood’s most historic and impressive building. Currently, it is a beautiful museum called the Museum of Confluences, where local crafts feature prominently.
