Some outdated travelers have in mind the image of a Morocco with simple hotels, unsophisticated and with limited professionalism, organized in an almost family-like manner. However, it is already one of the great tourist powers of Africa and there are many and varied luxury accommodations in Morocco. In this post we review all the typologies that, as you will see, are spread throughout the country.
Luxury tent in the desert
As we explained in this other post, in the heart of the desert dunes, as in Erg Chebbi (Merzouga), there are Berber tents of real luxury. We invite you to read the article to discover their comfort and charm, unmatched by the place in which they are inserted.
Riad in the historical medinas
The riad is one of the most characteristic types of accommodation in Morocco. It is a small building that, in the past, functioned as a community of neighbors, composed of several family homes, all organized around an inner courtyard. This is the most characteristic element of the riad, as it usually has a refreshing water fountain, vegetation and typical Arab decoration, such as tiles, plaster reliefs and wooden beams.
Kasbahs in the pre-Saharan valleys
Between the Atlas and the Sahara there are valleys such as the Draa or the Dades, known for forming the Route of the Thousand Kasbahs, which are ancient adobe castles built by the Berbers in order to protect the caravan routes. Some of them were residences of powerful families and many have been rehabilitated as luxury accommodations. Others, on the other hand, have been built from scratch as hotel-kasbah, but maintaining the materials and the typical taste of the region.
Resort in sun and beach destinations
Luxury accommodations in Morocco include seaside resorts, consisting of a large building with premium rooms, a swimming pool and numerous high-level common areas such as a gym, massage room, etc.. And all this, just a few meters from the beach. Therefore, they are common in destinations such as Agadir, Taghazout, Al Hoceima or Saidia, where people travel with the intention of spending a relaxing and de-stressing vacation.
Historic hotels in iconic cities
Lovers of historic and charming accommodations have an appointment with some of the country’s legendary hotels. For example, in Tangier, a city that in the 20th century was an International Zone and a meeting point for intellectuals, diplomats and other foreign personalities. The famous Continental Hotel and the Minzah are located here. And not far from here, in Tetouan, are located prestigious hotels used at the time of the Spanish Protectorate, such as the Ville Josephine. In these and other places, scenes of the famous series El tiempo entre costuras were filmed.
Boutique hotels, the most chic
Finally, we could not forget the so-called ’boutique hotels’, that is, hotels located in large cities, often in modern new buildings, or in historic buildings rehabilitated for this purpose. They stand out for their minimalist decoration, for their high quality catering service and for the exquisiteness in every detail. Marrakech is perhaps the city with the greatest variety of this type of accommodation, but other cities such as Casablanca or Rabat also have a lot to offer tourists interested in this segment.
