In a country with such an extensive coastline (around 2,000 km) and so focused on tourism, there is no shortage of marinas where you can enjoy a good sea crossing. Therefore, in this post we tell you where to sail in Morocco, whether or not you have a skipper’s license.
Where to sail in the Mediterranean
The Mediterranean coast of Morocco is widely used by private boats for maritime crossings, some of them with destination or origin on the other shore. In fact, at some points, the Spanish coast is really close (the Strait of Gibraltar is only 14 km wide at its narrowest point). Therefore, from Tangier to the Algerian border, there are several existing marinas, some of them opened in recent years to serve this booming activity.
This is a list of the main ones:
- Marina Saidia: port of this city of great development in recent decades, located in the far east of the country. Precisely for this reason, it is one of the most modern and a good place for those who are looking for a place to sail in Morocco with a premium level. It has a whopping 800 moorings, for vessels up to 60 meters in length and 4 meters in draught
- Ports of Tetouan: paradoxically, the city of Tetouan is landlocked, but the coast is just 10 km away, and that makes it has three marinas. Marina Mdiq, Marina Kabila and, above all, Marina Smir. The latter port is the liveliest and offers the widest range of premium services, with restaurants, bars, cafes, bars and restaurants
- Marina Alhucemas: it is the marina of this city of tourist boom and in it is located its Nautical Club. Its catalog of restaurant and leisure services is limited, but the beauty and tranquility of the surroundings make it a good place to sail in Morocco.
Where to sail in the Atlantic
The Atlantic coast, which runs from Tangier to the southern tip of the country, is more extensive. Although the concentration of marinas is not as dense as in the Mediterranean, there are premium level ports to enjoy a good crossing. These are the most important ones:
- Tanja Marina Bay (Tangier marina): in a city so devoted to trade and maritime navigation, a marina was a must. - Port of Rabat-Salé, known as Marina Bouregreg: in reality, as its name indicates, it is a port located at the mouth of the river of the same name. It serves the capital and the neighboring city of Salé, as they form a single metropolitan area. With 250 moorings, for boats up to 100 meters in length and 4 meters draught
- Marina Agadir: as we indicated in this post, it is a tourist attraction in itself, with premium services for those who spend their vacations in a resort in this destination. In fact, its size is relatively modest, with 300 moorings and boats up to 30 meters in length. But the accommodation, leisure and restaurant offerings give it a plus for those who, in addition to sailing in Morocco, are looking for quality and relaxation.
- Marina Casablanca: despite not being the most picturesque marina (being located next to the cargo port), it offers service to those who wish to sail around Morocco from the most populated city in the country.
