Enjoying a hammam, thermal baths, a spa, or thalassotherapy in Morocco are options available to you during your trip. We already mentioned in another post that wellness tourism is booming in the country and attracts many visitors. In this article, we aim to clarify the differences between these four modalities, as well as mention some places where they can be found. Whichever you prefer, we can help you include it in your travel package.
Understanding each concept
Although they are sometimes used as synonyms, the truth is that hammam, thermal baths, spa, and thalassotherapy in Morocco represent different concepts, as in other countries with Arab or Islamic cultures. They are all related to well-being, but they achieve it through different techniques, procedures, and even facilities.
The hammam is the most traditional and characteristic of the three. They are water and steam baths at different temperatures (warm-hot-cold) and became widely popular during the Middle Ages as a hygiene method for the population, a function they still maintain today in many towns and among the more modest sectors of society. However, given their benefits and tradition, many have been adapted to offer a premium experience for foreign tourists.
Regarding thermal baths, the term of Roman origin refers to hot, mineral-rich waters that flow from natural springs. While in some cases these waters can be enjoyed outdoors, it is common for private investors or public institutions to build a spa center alongside them so that clients can enjoy them in a more peaceful, private, and pleasant environment.
For its part, the spa is conceived as a wellness space that encompasses many well-being techniques and treatments, whether water-based or not. For example, it may contain hammam-style rooms to provide the experience of baths at different temperatures. It can also include saunas, jacuzzis, or even rooms for massages, physiotherapy, and other treatments for the skin and body in general. The waters used are typically not thermal.
Finally, it is also possible to find thalassotherapy spaces in Morocco. This term refers to treatments centered on the sea and its resources: not only seawater but also other elements found within it, such as mud and algae. This practice was already explored in antiquity but was revived primarily in the late 18th century in Northern European countries, eventually spreading to the rest of the world.
Where to enjoy each modality
The good news for travelers interested in wellness is that they can enjoy hammams, spas, thermal baths, and thalassotherapy in Morocco. Hammams are widely present in all cities: in less touristy areas, you will find the more popular and modest versions of these baths, but in others like Marrakech, Fez, or Rabat, you will find the aforementioned premium versions.
Thermal baths are less numerous in the country, but they are still present. For example, in Moulay Yacoub, near Meknes, as we mentioned in this other post. Of course, spas have developed significantly in recent years, largely linked to high-end hotels, which do not hesitate to include them in their facilities. Therefore, they are abundant in resorts in destinations such as Tangier or Tetouan, but also in Casablanca, the country’s largest city.
Regarding thalassotherapy in Morocco, it is necessary to head to coastal destinations, as is logical. In this sense, Agadir and its surroundings are standing out in this modality, which can also be found in the aforementioned city of Casablanca.
